How Does Metal Fabrication Work?

The metal fabrication process begins with the client providing a full set of specifications for a project. This will need to include the measurements, type of metal, amounts and delivery date. After this, the talented designers at Bayview Metal’s will produce a suitable design for approval, after this the manufacturing process can begin.

All of the design work, manufacturing and fabrication of a metal product is done at the Bayview Metal facility. The details of the fabrication plan will be executed by highly-skilled staff wielding cutting-edge equipment like CNC punching machines, laser cutters and welders. All this ensures that customers are punctually provided with products of the finest quality.

What Is CNC Turret Punch Press?

Computer Numerical Controlled Turret Punch Press is an important part of the sheet metal fabrication and applies a variety of tools to cutting or punching out designs from sheet metal. A top of the line CNC Turret press can handle a vide number of operations including embossing, countersinking, small bends, lances, and knockouts to name only a few. Bayview Metals employs the best Amada machinery that allows for a range of precision cuts from 0.040″ to 4.500″.

What are the Benefits of Custom Sheet Metal Fabrication?

The main benefits include:

Production of just about any metal design in a wide range of sizes from very small precision products to very large items.

Fabrication that includes perfect quality control and precision dimensional tolerance, design and shape

Because the final design will be made to exact specifications no further adjustments will be needed.

Because clients work in direct communication with the fabrication team, they have full control over the detail of the fabrication process.

Because there is such close communications between the clients and the fabrication company, the process can be completed much faster.

Improved product quality and durability –– your items can be fabricated to meet the exact specifications of its work environments. This includes the chemicals, temperatures, stress and other work conditions that will arise.

What is DFM (Design for Manufacturability)?

This is the part of the process where the client and fabrication team examine the design, manufacturing capacity and resources to ensure that the work is being done as cost effectively as possible. This process will also examine the quantity needed, conforming set quality standards and any other specifications the client may have.

Some other important points that are examined include:

  • Part specifications
  • Quality compliance
  • Quality testing compliance
  • Material type
  • Environmental compliance
What is the difference between metal stamping and metal fabrication?

Metal stamping is the term given to a specific set of metal working operations that are used in addition to pressing, stretching, forming stamping and bending to produce a final product. Metal stamping processes utilize custom made tools and dies on a punch press to create a variety of shapes and patterns or other details a part may require. Generally, the stamping process is capable of tighter tolerances than the regular metal fabrication. This process is both fast and cost effective for a wide variety of metal work in larger quantities. .

On the other hand, metal fabrication involves the production of 3-dimensional metal parts and pieces cutting, bending and other assembly process. This usually calls for special equipment like CNS turret presses, CNC press brakes, CNC laser cutters and welding. This is often a better a better option for projects with lower quantities of final products because the tooling and creation of dies is not cheap Fabrication can also allow for greater versatility than regular stamping.

What is a CNC press brake machine?

This device is used to control the bends made in sheet metal. CNC, or Computer Numerical Control means that the machine is controlled through a software systems and PLC control to ensure the most identical repetition throughout the process so that all possible variables such as pressure, die selection and back gauge setting are controlled by computer.

How does a press brake work?

The press bake will clamp down on sheet metal between a punch and dies and this creates the folds and bends needed. The back gauge will determine the size of the bend, the RAM punches the metal and the die determines the angles and radius of the bend. The CNC allows the controllers to carry out most of these operations and allows this process to be completed quickly and easily.
